BOAT FARES IN LAMU UP ON RISE IN FUEL PRICES

Boat op­er­a­tors in Lamu have in­creased charges fol­low­ing the im­ple­men­ta­tion of the 16 per cent Value Added Tax on pe­tro­leum prod­ucts.

The new fares were an­nounced by boat op­er­a­tors’ as­so­ci­a­tion.

A spot check by showed the boat op­er­a­tors in the Lamu ar­chi­pel­ago have in­creased the fares by at least 35 per­cent.

Boat trav­ellers are now pay­ing Sh200 from Lamu Old Town to Mokowe in­stead of the nor­mal Sh150 per per­son us­ing speed boat.

To hire a pri­vate speed boat from

Lamu Is­land to Mokowe, one needs to cough Sh2,000, up from Sh1,000. Those trav­el­ling from Lamu Old Town to Manda Air­port in a nor­mal pas­sen­gers’ speed boat are now pay­ing Sh200, up from Sh100. To hire a pri­vate boat, one needs Sh1,000, com­pared to Sh500 paid pre­vi­ously to cross from Lamu Old Town to the Manda Air­port.
