BOAT FARES IN LAMU UP ON RISE IN FUEL PRICES
Boat operators in Lamu have increased charges following the implementation of the 16 per cent Value Added Tax on petroleum products.
The new fares were announced by boat operators’ association.
A spot check by showed the boat operators in the Lamu archipelago have increased the fares by at least 35 percent.
Boat travellers are now paying Sh200 from Lamu Old Town to Mokowe instead of the normal Sh150 per person using speed boat.
To hire a private speed boat from
Lamu Island to Mokowe, one needs to cough Sh2,000, up from Sh1,000. Those travelling from Lamu Old Town to Manda Airport in a normal passengers’ speed boat are now paying Sh200, up from Sh100. To hire a private boat, one needs Sh1,000, compared to Sh500 paid previously to cross from Lamu Old Town to the Manda Airport.
