Sh60m hotel property goes up in smoke
Hotel property worth more than Sh60 million has been lost in a fire in Mombasa.
Indiana Beach Apartment Hotel and Ziwani Beach Resort, both in Bamburi, caught fire on Friday night.
According to Indiana Beach Apartment Hotel financial controller Abdul Bachani, the fire broke out shortly after 7pm at the hotel’s restaurant — the Beach Hut. He said the restaurant’s makuti roof caught fire.
He added that due to strong winds from the sea, the blaze quickly spread to the bar and the kitchen.
“The fire gutted a fully equipped and well-stocked restaurant, bar and kitchen, resulting in a loss of about Sh30 million,” said Mr Bachani.
At Ziwani Beach Resort, a director who wished not to be named said the inferno destroyed six apartments. He further said four others were partially burnt.
He said the hotel’s restaurant, bar, kitchen and stores were also burnt down, adding that the staff salvaged some furniture.
“We suffered loss of Sh30 million,” he said.
Bamburi Beach Hotel general manager Charles Ibukah said the fire caused loss of Sh200,000 at the resort.
