About 17,000 people in Machakos are in dire need of relief food following crop failure this year, area county commissioner has said.

Matilda Sakwa said the government had recently distributed food aid to people who were hit by severe drought but it was not enough after the March-may rains failed.

“I have directed deputy county commissioners in every subcounty and chiefs and their assistants to monitor the situation across the county so that we give aid to only the people who have been hit the hardest by drought,’’ she said.

Ms Sakwa said the most affected sub-counties are Masinga and Yatta.

She also advised residents in the county to embrace modern farming techniques to boost crop production and increase food security.

“I am asking residents to stop reliance on rain-fed agriculture which leads to famine when rains fail but instead to start planting drought-resistant crops,” she said.
