Tourists flock to ar­chi­pel­ago for an­nual cul­tural cel­e­bra­tion

Trans­porters in Lamu are record­ing huge profits as lo­cal and in­ter­na­tional tourists flock to the ar­chi­pel­ago for the Lamu Cul­tural Fes­ti­val, which be­gins to­mor­row. The an­nual four-day fes­ti­val show­cases the rich cul­ture of the Swahili peo­ple. Since Mon­day, bus com­pa­nies and air­lines have been do­ing roar­ing busi­ness. Mr Ahmed Yusuf, an at­ten­dant at Lamu Tah­meed Bus, said their buses are fully booked. The sit­u­a­tion is the same at the Tawakal Bus of­fices, where at­ten­dant Said Sharif said they are booked up to Thurs­day. Air­lines such as Fly 540 ply­ing the Mom­basa-lamu and Malindil­amu route are also fully booked for the next three days. Shop own­ers, gro­cery stores and boat own­ers wel­comed the boost in busi­ness.
