Garlic has many compounds that could help in programmed cell death. A study published in the Cancer Preventive Research Journal found that garlic can reverse, stop or slow down the development of lung cancer. The study, conducted between 2003 and 2010 in China, sought to find the connection between raw garlic and lung cancer. However they could not determine which compounds in garlic are responsible for that outcome. High consumption of raw or cooked garlic can also protect against colorectal cancer. Researchers at the University of Australia reviewed studies from the last decade and found that five out of eight cases suggested a protective effect.
