For the long­est time, Kenya has con­sid­ered it­self a kind of re­gional su­per­power, and take an aloof­ness to im­por­tant eco­nomic and po­lit­i­cal mat­ters. While it is okay to as­sert au­thor­ity, we for­got what value there may be in soft power. As tes­ti­mony, while we flexed our mus­cle, Uganda and Tan­za­nia got talk­ing and sealed an oil pipe­line deal. By the time we woke up to it, it was al­ready too late. Some­thing tells me our sal­vage ef­forts might be fu­tile, and that there is no stop­ping our two neigh­bours.^
