The new Nairobi-mombasa 20-inch diameter 450km pipeline (line 5) — owned by the Kenya Pipeline Corporation — is likely to be commissioned in the fourth quarter (October-december) of this year. The contractor, Zakhem International Construction Ltd said that over 94 per cent of the work is complete on the Ksh48 billion project. “The line 5 pipeline project, which is also the country’s second largest infrastructural undertaking, is now in the final phase of development and will be ready for commissioning by the end of this year,” Zakhem Ibrahim, the firm’s chief executive said last week. Zakhem International is responsible for procurement, construction and commissioning (PCC Contract) of the project. KPC is in the process of replacing the existing Mombasa-nairobi pipeline, that has been in operation for 38 years.
