Human-rights group, watchdog to probe police brutality against students
NAIROBI: Kenya’s Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Kenya Human Rights Commission launched investigations into police brutality against University of Nairobi students. Videos showing police officers clobbering students at their hostels emerged on social media last week on Thursday. IPOA said it had dispatched a Rapid Response unit to probe the attack on students during demonstrations for the release of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. The legislator — a former student leader at the university — was arrested on charges of assault, subversion, and uttering abusive words against President Uhuru Kenyatta. He was later released.
