PRITI PATEL: The British overseas aid minister resigned after being summoned back from a trip to Uganda and Ethiopia following revelations that she held 14 secret and unauthorised meetings with Israeli officials in August.
MARTHA O’DONOVAN: The American journalist who wasa accused of insulting President Robert Mugabe was released on bail by a Zimbabwean court. She is also accused of plotting to topple him through her tweets.
SAAD HARIRI: The Lebanese prime minister resigned during a trip to Saudi Arabia barely a year after his appointment, saying that his life was in danger and accusing Iran of “a strong desire” to destroy the Arab world.
WAHOME GAKURU: The governor of Nyeri County, Kenya, died in a road accident two months after he was voted into office. He becomes the second governor to die in office after Nderitu Gachagua, who died in February.
BARACK OBAMA: Former US president turned up for jury duty at a Chicago courthouse, but was dismissed without being called on to serve. He becomes the second president to show up for the service after George W Bush.
