UK museum offers to return seized treasures but only on long-term loan’
ETHIOPIA: A UK museum has offered to return treasures taken by British troops 150 years ago during the British invasion of Ethiopia on a “long-term loan.”
The Victoria and Albert Museum, where the treasures, including a gold crown and a royal wedding dress, are on display said the offer would see the artifacts sent to Ethiopia on long-term loan, so ownership would remain with the museum.
Ethiopia has campaigned for the return of the treasures since it was seized. In 2007, it lodged a formal restitution claim to have them returned, but the bid wasrejected.
