Nigeria polls to go on as planned

The East African - - OUTLOOK -

The News: Nigeria's electoral body Wednesday said there was no plan to postpone the 2019 general elections as was being speculated in media.

The Lowdown: Spokesperson for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Rotimi Oyekanmi said the clarification became necessary following a media report, which he said is not not what INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu said at the inter agency consultative committee on polls security meeting in Abuja. Mr Oyekanmi said Mr Yakubu told the security chiefs at the meeting that as the 2019 general elections drew close, the committee would need to meet more frequently. This, according to him, is to constantly assess the security situation across the country and take proactive actions to forestall any unpleasant event before, during and after the elections. Nigeria's general election will be held next February where President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to face off with Senate Speaker Bukola Saraki.
