ODM to parade Jubilee defectors at anniversary celebrations in Mombasa
The Orange party has witnessed a mass exodus of members to Jubilee and in some instances its members silently support the government
ODM has said it will parade “many Jubilee defectors” tomorrow during celebrations of its 10th anniversary to be held in Mombasa.
Deputy party leader Hassan Joho yesterday said they are members who have been deep in Jubilee and some are nominated.
He did not confirm or deny whether Kenyan ambassador to Tanzania Chirau Ali Mwakwere is among those to be paraded.
Reports are rife that the ambassador is seeking the ODM ticket after Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya moved to the Jubilee Party. Mwakwere had eyed the JP ticket.
But Joho said Mvurya’s public announcement that he will support JP might have been a slip of the tongue.
“It could be one of those statements they make in a political rally and later realise they made a mistake,” he said.
Joho said former Cord leaders who have defected have lost ground and are engaging in sideshows to stay in the game.
Leaders from the Coast who have defected to Jubilee include Mvurya, Hussein Dado (Wiper, Tana River), Mustafa Iddi (Kilifi South), Zainab Chidzuga (Kwale), Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North), Khatib Mwashetani (Lunga Lunga) and Masoud Mwahima (Likoni).
“Anyone who wants to leave should do so… We are not worried neither are we shaken,” Joho said.
ODM has witnessed an exodus of its members. In some instances, some members silently support the government.
Joho said the March 7 Malindi by-election was testimony that rebels would not triumph at the Coast.
“There was a lot of political wrestling and chest thumping from rebels. They mobilised a lot of resources that we have never seen before, but we carried the day,” he said.
Joho spoke when he toured Mama Ngina Drive where ODM will hold its anniversary before making a ‘major declaration’.
In what appears to be a show of might, Joho said more than 47 buses branded with the ODM colours will take supporters to Mombasa. By press time they had not been flagged off.
JP has bought 47 Prados branded with its colours and logo.
