Teachers’ 300% pay increase demand will hurt economy

The Star (Kenya) - - Voices -

If the 300 per cent salary increment requested by teachers is effected, it means Kenyans will have to pay higher taxes. This will consequently raise the cost of living, slow down our economy and increase unemployment and poverty. It is an unsustainable cost which will also cause imbalance in remuneration in the civil service. This is against what the constitution envisaged with the formation of a Salaries and Remuneration Commission. We have to look at some of these pay demands in comparison with our economy.
