KMA Lamu safety workshop disrupted
A Kenya Maritime Authority workshop to educate boat owners on safety at the Mwana Arafa Hotel was disrupted on Wednesday. The more than 500 boat owners protested against the stiffness of the maritime regulations. Police had to intervene. The boat operators and the KMA officials disagreed on how and when penalties for maritime crimes are implemented. The operators said the penalties are too harsh. The scuffle lasted close to an hour. Lamu county commissioner Joseph Kanyiri urged the boat owners to adhere to the maritime rules. Kanyiri defended the KMA, saying it does not form the regulations. “Maritime rules must be followed to the letter,” Kanyiri said. KMA director Chenje Mwachiro said the objective was to educate all on safety while at sea.
