Midiwo attacked by youths in Nyadorera
He had earlier accused Rasanga of illegally leasing 6,000 acres of the Yala Swamp
Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo was on Sunday attacked by youths in Nyadorera. The youths were armed with pangas and rungus.
He was accompanied by Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo and Siaya politician William Oduol. Nobody was hurt.
The politicians were on their way to Sidundo in Usonga for a political rally.
Immediately Midiwo mentioned Governor Cornel Rasanga and Usonga MCA Sylvester Madialo names the youths attacked him. A youth broke the right side window of Midiwo’s car. Midiwo had earlier accused Rasanga of illegally leasing 6,000 acres of the Yala Swamp.
He claimed the governor pocketed Sh70 million after leasing out the land to Godavari Company. But Rasanga has denied pocketing the cash. He said he decided to carry out a comprehensive survey following objections against leasing part of the swamp by the Kenya Wildlife Service and NGOs.
Early on Sunday, Midiwo had attended a fundraiser in Siaya at St Peter’s Cathedral Church. Unaware they would be ambushed, the three made a stopover at Nyadorera to address residents.
Two bodyguards attached to Gumbo and Midiwo shot in the air to disperse the crowd. Midiwo was forced to cut short his speech, ending the impromptu roadside rally.
However, the Sidundo rally went on as planned.
Yesterday Rasanga condemned the incident, saying everyone has a right to campaign anywhere.
