Bandari Sacco members protest loan deduction from their 2015 bonuses
The Bandari Sacco board was forced to meet on Wednesday to ratify a decision to pay their members their full bonuses to avert a strike.
It had deducted loan repayments from the bonuses of Kenya Ports Authority workers who are paid through the sacco. KPA employees are paid through Bandari Sacco, Mombasa Port Co-op and commercial banks.
Some 7,000 sacco members had on Tuesday threatened to disrupt operations at the port should they not get their full bonuses and held protests at the sacco offices.
A disruption of operations would cause massive losses running into millions of shillings.
Any industrial unrest at the port would cause delays in service delivery, resulting in loss of business in the freight sector.
