Ugan­dan MPs to get ‘golden ju­bilee’ medals

Uganda’s Par­lia­ment is set to spend USh600 mil­lion ($177,000) on medals to award 1,200 MPs who served in Par­lia­ment from 1962 to 2012.

Uganda marked its 50th year of in­de­pen­dence from the UK in 2012 un­der Pres­i­dent Yow­eri Mu­sev­eni (pic­tured). Ugan­dans have ex­pressed dis­ap­proval at lav­ish spend­ing on medals, say­ing the money should be spent in ar­eas like health­care, the Mon­i­tor says. Op­po­si­tion leader Kizza Be­si­gye and his wife Win­nie Byany­ima are on the list of those to get medals. Par­lia­ment com­mis­sion has al­lo­cated USh50 mil­lion ($14,500) for MPs’ funeral ex­penses.
