Ugandan MPs to get ‘golden jubilee’ medals
Uganda’s Parliament is set to spend USh600 million ($177,000) on medals to award 1,200 MPs who served in Parliament from 1962 to 2012.
Uganda marked its 50th year of independence from the UK in 2012 under President Yoweri Museveni (pictured). Ugandans have expressed disapproval at lavish spending on medals, saying the money should be spent in areas like healthcare, the Monitor says. Opposition leader Kizza Besigye and his wife Winnie Byanyima are on the list of those to get medals. Parliament commission has allocated USh50 million ($14,500) for MPs’ funeral expenses.
