Betting will drive Kenyans to poverty if unchecked – MP

The Star (Kenya) - - Counties Rift Valley -

An MP has warned many Kenyans could become poor if regulations to check foreign betting companies are not put in place.

Turkana woman representative Joyce Emanikor on Friday said betting firms are fleecing people. “Money deducted from our phones when we bet is transferred straight out of the country. Just calculate the little money you put in every time you bet then compare it with what you receive. Do we really want to see a society poorer than we already are?” she said.

Emanikor said betting firms could be making up to Sh9 billion every month. “This estimation is on the lower side. The amount could be tenfold more. Even in the developed world, the sector is restricted and regulated,” she said.

The National Assembly failed to set up a select committee to investigate the activities of the betting companies.
