Dagoretti chil­dren’s res­cue cen­tre gets Sh136m to re­ha­bil­i­tate street fam­i­lies

Am­ref Child Pro­tec­tion and De­vel­op­ment Cen­tre in Dagoretti has re­ceived Sh136 mil­lion from the Ital­ian For­eign min­istry to re­ha­bil­i­tate 5,000 street fam­i­lies.

The funds will be used to sup­port 3,500 youths at risk and vul­ner­a­ble street chil­dren.

Drug abusers will be re­ha­bil­i­tated, they will be taught var­i­ous skills and coun­selled so they can be­come use­ful mem­bers of so­ci­ety.

Am­ref will also train 1,500 par­ents of street chil­dren in a project called Out of the Streets.

Home­less adults, mainly women, will be trained in em­broi­dery and knit­ting so they can earn a liv­ing.

“To se­cure the sus­tain­abil­ity of this in­ter­ven­tion, the grant will go to­wards build­ing the ca­pac­ity of com­mu­nity or­gan­i­sa­tions in child pro­tec­tion and case man­age­ment,” Am­ref coun­try di­rec­tor Me­shack Ndi­rangu said.
