Avert looming drought, urges MP Shidiye
Drought Management Authority warns of worsening situation if it doesn’t rain soon
Leaders from Garissa county have called for drought intervention. Lagdera MP Mohamed Shidiye urged the national and county governments to work together to ensure pastoralists do not lose their animals during droughts. He was addressing the press in Garissa town on Sunday.
“We are at a critical time in both Garissa and Isiolo. We have a looming drought that might lead to famine. Something needs to be done urgently otherwise hundreds of livestock could be lost,” Shidiye said.
The two counties have not received rain for three months. According to the National Drought Management Authority, the situation will worsen if it does not rain in the next few weeks.
Shidiye said the fresh clashes at the Garissa-Isiolo border between the Borana and Somali are caused by the scramble for pasture and water. “When you have a drought exacerbated by conflicts between two communities, naturally the situation will be aggra- vated. Thus, the need to prevent the situation from getting out of hand,” he said.
Speaking separately, Masalani MCA Abubakar Shide and his Ijara counterpart Mohamed Abdullahi urged the county government to increase the number of water boozers to reach all the corners of the county. Shidiye said, “It is important that the county government responds to the needs of its people. They should be pro-active and not reactive,” Shide said.
