Maralal pupils stranded on way home as river bursts banks after heavy rains
Hundreds of pupils headed home from schools were marooned after a river burst its banks following heavy rainfall. The children were released early from Loikas Primary School but could not cross the River Loikas. Parents had to wait several hours along the banks for the water to subside before picking up their children. Other pupils were from St Paul’s and Maralal primary schools, and could not cross to their homes at Miami, Loikas, Mtaro and Chang’aa in Maralal town. Residents urged the county and national governments to build two bridges to enable children to cross the river to and from school even when it rains. Mercilna Lesilampa, a board member at Loikas, said many children who cross the river do not report to school during the rainy season for fear of being carried away by floods.
