Police put gang of six men on notice
The criminals have killed three watchmen in Kakamega town and injured another
Police in Kakamega town have put on notice a gang of six that has terrorised the public for the past month. It has killed three watchmen and injured another.
Two of the watchmen were killed near Nakumatt supermarket and one at the Total filling station near the Kakamega Central police station.
The gang is said to comprise ex-convicts and could be led by a life sentence escapee from Kibos Prison in Kisumu.
Other members are said to be out on bond for capital offences. Police on Monday night arrested six suspects and recovered a Beretta pistol.
Three men had broken into the Golden Inn Hotel and stole electronic goods and frisked lodgers.
Western regional police boss Moses Ombati yesterday said officers have arrested two people with pangas stashed in a sack.
They also arrested two people who raided the hotel but one escaped.
“They raided the hotel but police responded quickly. One of them opened fire on the officers, who responded and hit him in the leg. They recovered a gun from him,” Ombati said. He said the gang waylaid an officer and chopped off his hands as he walked to a nearby shop on Milimani estate two weeks ago.
“This is a new group emerging because the town has been relatively calm for a long time. We have declared total war on the criminals,” Ombati said.
Incidents of criminals stealing cash from residents and gang-raping women in Kakamega town have been on the rise since June.
