A gold miner on Monday slipped and fell to his death at Aloidi mines in South Kamagambo ward, Rongo. Robert Weke, 23, was climbing down a ladder when he fell and drowned in the mine, which was filled with water following heavy rains.

Kitere chief Erick Mala said his workmates found him dead at the bottom of the pit. Rongo police boss Jonathan Kisaka urged miners to be careful. He said many miners risk suffocation and death in collapsed mines.

Meanwhile, a nine-year-old girl was electrocuted in North Kamagambo ward, Rongo, on Monday. Frida Atieno and her seven-year-old friend were playing when they stepped on illegally connected wires exposed following heavy rains. “They were playing in a pool of rain water when the accident occurred,” Kisaka said. Atieno’s friend is hospitalised in critical condition.
