Del­e­gates hold of­fi­cers hostage over sem­i­nar pay

Del­e­gates who rep­re­sented Si­aya in the re­cent Na­tional Youth Con­fer­ence on Peace yes­ter­day held county of­fi­cials hostage at a Bondo ho­tel, de­mand­ing their al­lowances.

They de­manded Sh10,000 for the four days they spent at the con­fer­ence, not Sh1,500 the county wanted to of­fer them. They blocked county Youth Af­fairs direc­tor Win­nie Oyugi from leav­ing the Green Court Ho­tel, where they had been booked.

Of­fi­cial Peter Otieno sought po­lice in­ter­ven­tion af­ter the sit­u­a­tion al­most de­gen­er­ated into a fight.The youths claimed Otieno had in­formed them the county al­lo­cated Sh3.5 mil­lion and each del­e­gate was to pocket Sh10,000, only to be told in the af­ter­noon to sign Sh1,500 vouch­ers. They pledged to stay put in the ho­tel un­til they are paid.
