El­doret set for Fam­ily Bank 21Km

BY STAN­LEY MAGUT/ El­doret town comes alive next Sun­day as de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons and up­starts are ex­pected to bat­tle it out at the Fam­ily Bank El­doret Half Marathon.

The event comes af­ter a suc­cess­ful stag­ing of Olympic tri­als in the town with hun­dreds of ath­letes set to prove their worth in the tenth edi­tion.

Sammy Kirui who won the 2009 Gut­ten­berg half marathon took the men’s ti­tle last year with a 62:41 time per­for­mance while Caro­line Chep­chirchir won the women’s ti­tle.

Ac­cord­ing to the chair­man Ath­let­ics Kenya Uasin Gishu County Mjr.rtd Charles Ch­e­sire, over 1200 ath­letes are ex­pected to par­tic­i­pate in the event.

“The race is im­prov­ing in each edi­tion and we are ex­pect­ing the de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons on Sun­day. Many ath­letes train­ing in the North Rift re­gion will also grace it since it will be the only big event in the area,”Ch­e­sire said.

Ch­e­sire said they are still in dis­cus­sion with the rel­e­vant bod­ies to have the course cer­ti­fied by In­ter­na­tional As­so­ci­a­tion of Ath­let­ics Fed­er­a­tions.
