County commissioner says Bosibori was shot in the chest and Kerubo in the abdomen as APs confronted boda bodas
Kisii shooting sparked protests
The shooting led to protests in Kisii town and destruction of property of unknown value. The county commissioner denied social media reports that Deputy President William Ruto’s security detail was involved in the shooting. Those killed were identified as Edna Bosibori, 21, and Irene Kerubo, 36.
Ten Administration Police officers have recorded statements over the fatal shootings of two women at Daraja Mbili market in Kisii town on Thursday evening.
County commissioner Kula Hache and Deputy Governor Joash Maangi assured the public the officers will be held responsible.
The women were identified as Edna Bosibori, 21, and Irene Kerubo, 36. Hache said the shooting was sparked by a confrontation between the APs and boda boda operators.
“We have started investigations and a case file has already been opened. We appeal to witnesses and affected families to record statements,” Hache said.
She denied social media reports that Deputy President William Ruto’s security detail was involved in the shooting. Hache said the officers involved are based at the Gesonso Quick Response Team base and were on regular patrol.
“The DP’s security detail was operating between Gusii Stadium and the Kisii Sports Club. At no time did the officers go to Daraja Mbili market. Those involved are our officers and they will be held responsible as individuals,” she said.
Maangi said, “Social media is awash with reports Ruto’s security was involved, but they are false and malicious. Let us stop spreading rumours.” He said those involved will face the full force of the law. “I assure the public something is being done. Allow the investigative agencies to do their job.”
The killings sparked riots in Kisii town for the better part of the night. There was massive property destruction. The mob stormed the CBD, vandalised and looted shops. At Kisii bus park, the mob stormed a restaurant and ate all the food before heading to Kisii town, where they smashed windows. Police shot several times in the air and lobbed teargas canisters.
