Kisii shoot­ing sparked protests

The shoot­ing led to protests in Kisii town and de­struc­tion of prop­erty of un­known value. The county com­mis­sioner de­nied so­cial me­dia re­ports that Deputy Pres­i­dent Wil­liam Ruto’s se­cu­rity de­tail was in­volved in the shoot­ing. Those killed were iden­ti­fied as Edna Bosi­bori, 21, and Irene Kerubo, 36.

Ten Ad­min­is­tra­tion Po­lice of­fi­cers have recorded state­ments over the fa­tal shoot­ings of two women at Daraja Mbili mar­ket in Kisii town on Thursday evening.

County com­mis­sioner Kula Hache and Deputy Gov­er­nor Joash Maangi as­sured the pub­lic the of­fi­cers will be held re­spon­si­ble.

The women were iden­ti­fied as Edna Bosi­bori, 21, and Irene Kerubo, 36. Hache said the shoot­ing was sparked by a con­fronta­tion be­tween the APs and boda boda op­er­a­tors.

“We have started in­ves­ti­ga­tions and a case file has al­ready been opened. We ap­peal to wit­nesses and af­fected fam­i­lies to record state­ments,” Hache said.

She de­nied so­cial me­dia re­ports that Deputy Pres­i­dent Wil­liam Ruto’s se­cu­rity de­tail was in­volved in the shoot­ing. Hache said the of­fi­cers in­volved are based at the Gesonso Quick Re­sponse Team base and were on reg­u­lar pa­trol.

“The DP’s se­cu­rity de­tail was op­er­at­ing be­tween Gusii Sta­dium and the Kisii Sports Club. At no time did the of­fi­cers go to Daraja Mbili mar­ket. Those in­volved are our of­fi­cers and they will be held re­spon­si­ble as in­di­vid­u­als,” she said.

Maangi said, “So­cial me­dia is awash with re­ports Ruto’s se­cu­rity was in­volved, but they are false and ma­li­cious. Let us stop spread­ing ru­mours.” He said those in­volved will face the full force of the law. “I as­sure the pub­lic some­thing is be­ing done. Al­low the in­ves­tiga­tive agen­cies to do their job.”

The killings sparked ri­ots in Kisii town for the bet­ter part of the night. There was mas­sive prop­erty de­struc­tion. The mob stormed the CBD, van­dalised and looted shops. At Kisii bus park, the mob stormed a restau­rant and ate all the food be­fore head­ing to Kisii town, where they smashed win­dows. Po­lice shot sev­eral times in the air and lobbed tear­gas can­is­ters.
