Kenya’s Hus­sein re­elected Uni­ver­sal Posta Union boss

For­mer UAE am­bas­sador Bishar Hus­sein has been re­elected di­rec­tor gen­eral of the Uni­ver­sal Postal Union.

He will lead the UN or­gan­i­sa­tion un­til 2020. Hus­sein has been serv­ing in the po­si­tion since 2012 and his cur­rent term ends this year. The next be­gins in 2017.

UPU is re­spon­si­ble for the devel­op­ment of postal busi­ness in the world.

It com­prises 192 mem­ber coun­tries and sup­ports co­op­er­a­tion be­tween in­ter­na­tional postal play­ers.

Hus­sein de­feated Uruguay’s Ser­rana Bassini Casco by 87 votes to 72.

For­eign Af­fairs CS Mo­hamed Amina and ICT Cabi­net Sec­re­tary Joe Mucheru sup­ported his re­elec­tion in Istanbul, Turkey, where the polls were held.

In a state­ment from the Min­istry of For­eign Af­fairs, Mo­hamed ex­pressed grat­i­tude to the in­ter­na­tional com­mu­nity for re­elect­ing Hus­sein.

She said his re­elec­tion is a vote of con­fi­dence in Kenya.
