Aulian elders to reconcile Farah and Warsame
In video clip, Maalim is seen slapping and punching Warsame, who shields his face
Elders from former Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim’s clan will attempt to reconcile him and Somalia’s former Telecommunications minister Gele Warsame. Maalim attacked Warsame at a Nairobi hotel last week.
In one-minute CCTV footage dated September 29, Maalim is seen slapping and punching Warsame, who is shielding his face with both hands. Maalim has refused to disclose what led to the altercation. But sources say the fight broke after he accused Warsame of interfering with Garissa politics and supporting his opponents.
The Aulian clan elders, led by Sultan Hamud Sheikh, said elders from Kenya and Somalia have already met and sorted out the matter using traditional dispute resolution.
“The only thing left is to bring the two leaders together and iron out the differences once and for all. We will however not wish to see the scuffle politicised,” he told the press in Garissa town on Sunday.
Maalim commended the elders and the family leadership for stepping in. “The incident was a regrettable one and should not have happened. I want to apologise to my community in both Somalia and Kenya. We have now moved on, everything is behind us,” he said. “We will soon have a meal, shake hands and hug one another.”
