Briton’s release leaves police with ‘egg on face’

The Star (Kenya) - - Politics -

Police on Wednesday evening were forced to release Tom James and his two friends, putting Kenya’s counter-terrorism operations in an awkward position.

James, 32, is a British public relations professional working with M&C Saatchi Communications, while his friend are Danish citizen Yasmin Sheikhdoa and Kenyan Zamzam Hussein. They were dramatically arrested when more than 20 Anti-Terrorism Squad officers raided James’s home at Gigiri on Tuesday.

They were detained for two days and released late on Wednesday evening following diplomatic intervention from the British Foreign Office in Nairobi, a source said.

“The police were unable to share evidence they had or planned to use to charge them and to avoid further embarrassment and the triggering of a fresh diplomatic tiff and further strain on healing British-Kenya relations, they had to release the three of them. But of course with egg on their face,” a source said. Police had linked the three to al Shabaab, accusing them of radicalisation.
