Mbeere murder prosecution witness retracts testimony implicating accused
A prosecution witness yesterday retracted her testimony against a woman accused of the murder of an Embu clinical officer whom she lived with. Instead, Susan Njeri said clinical officer Erick Gitonga committed suicide. She had told Embu resident judge Florence Muchemi that Mercy Kariuko threw a stove filled with paraffin at her boyfriend Gitonga, lit a match stick and threw it at him. While being examined by prosecutor Brenda Nandwa, Njeri said she is the couple’s neighbour. She said she heard them quarrelling in their house at Kiritiri shopping centre and went to enquire.Njeri said the two stormed outof their house still quarreling. Gitonga, who was drunk, said Kariuko had thrown a stove at him, she told the court. But Njeri said Kariuko was stopping Gitonga from setting himself on fire. Kariuko is accused of killing Gitonga on January 23 last year.
