Mbeere mur­der pros­e­cu­tion wit­ness re­tracts tes­ti­mony im­pli­cat­ing ac­cused

A pros­e­cu­tion wit­ness yes­ter­day re­tracted her tes­ti­mony against a woman ac­cused of the mur­der of an Embu clin­i­cal of­fi­cer whom she lived with. In­stead, Su­san Njeri said clin­i­cal of­fi­cer Erick Gi­tonga com­mit­ted sui­cide. She had told Embu res­i­dent judge Florence Mu­chemi that Mercy Kar­iuko threw a stove filled with paraf­fin at her boyfriend Gi­tonga, lit a match stick and threw it at him. While be­ing ex­am­ined by pros­e­cu­tor Brenda Nandwa, Njeri said she is the cou­ple’s neigh­bour. She said she heard them quar­relling in their house at Kir­i­tiri shop­ping cen­tre and went to en­quire.Njeri said the two stormed outof their house still quar­rel­ing. Gi­tonga, who was drunk, said Kar­iuko had thrown a stove at him, she told the court. But Njeri said Kar­iuko was stop­ping Gi­tonga from set­ting him­self on fire. Kar­iuko is ac­cused of killing Gi­tonga on Jan­uary 23 last year.
