New national statistics system to be established
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has announced plans to set up a new national statistical system. This will be carried out under the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics, which will also review the organisational structures of individual information sectors. KNBS director general Zachary Mwangi said development of the NSDS is in response to the critical role of statistics in the country. He said the implementation of economic and social programmes for national development would be factored in the new system. “The NSDS framework places considerable emphasis on mainstreaming of statistics in all sectors, which implies strengthening of statistical capacities in ministries, departments, agencies as well as in the counties,” Mwangi said. He said the new system aims to satisfy priority user needs through provision of quality statistics.
