Nyanza matatu owners yesterday requested Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to reduce the number of roadblocks and police checkpoints on roads. They gave the IG two weeks to respond or else they will look for other avenues, including holding a mega demonstration. The group urged Boinnet to ensure police uniforms are pocketless. Chairperson Bob Andala said there are so many roadblocks and police checkpoints in Kisumu and Nyanza region as a whole. Andala said at an interval of every five kilometres, there is a roadblock by the National Transport Safety Authority, Kenya National Highway Authority, Traffic police or the crime department. He said they lose a lot of money daily because of the roadblocks, which he alleged are for collecting Sh100 from their vehicles on every trip. “They don’t carry out their traffic duties or criminal duties. We hope the IG will come to our rescue,” Andala said.
