Police confront Strathmore in play-offs after beating Sharks
After their 2-0 win against Green Sharks over the weekend, Kenya Police will now play Strathmore University during the Kenya Hockey Union men’s Premier League play-off next month.
The other play-off will pit defending champions and league leaders in Pool ‘A’ Butali Sugar Warriors, who were not in action this weekend against Green Sharks. With a 2-0 win against the Sharks, Police now top Pool ‘B’ with 13 points same as the Sharks although the law enforcers enjoy a superior goal difference. In Pool ‘A’ Strathmore University won away in Kisumu 1-0 against Bay Club to close in on the Warriors.
The students are second on standing with 13 points; five points behind the Warriors although all teams have played six games. It was a dream come true for the law enforcers head coach Kenneth Kaunda, who prior to the clash against Sharks, whose wish was to win and avoid rivals Warriors in the playoffs. “This win has worked for us in two ways; one, we finished the preliminary stage in pole position and two, emerged top in the our pool. We will not face Warrior in the early play-off stage,” he said.
“Having blown hot and cold in the early season, we are glad we are finally in the play-offs and we hope to reclaim the trophy we last won in 2013,” he added.
In the women’s league, 18-time local champions Orange Telkom made bare their intention to retain the trophy with their massive two wins against winless Day Star University 16-0 and Jomo Kenya University Agriculture and Technology 12-0.
With the win, Telkom lead the standing with 16 points from six matches, five points ahead of rivals Strathmore University, who were not in action over the weekend.
