Po­lice con­front Strath­more in play-offs af­ter beat­ing Sharks

Af­ter their 2-0 win against Green Sharks over the weekend, Kenya Po­lice will now play Strath­more Univer­sity dur­ing the Kenya Hockey Union men’s Pre­mier League play-off next month.

The other play-off will pit de­fend­ing cham­pi­ons and league lead­ers in Pool ‘A’ Bu­tali Sugar War­riors, who were not in ac­tion this weekend against Green Sharks. With a 2-0 win against the Sharks, Po­lice now top Pool ‘B’ with 13 points same as the Sharks al­though the law en­forcers en­joy a su­pe­rior goal dif­fer­ence. In Pool ‘A’ Strath­more Univer­sity won away in Kisumu 1-0 against Bay Club to close in on the War­riors.

The stu­dents are se­cond on stand­ing with 13 points; five points be­hind the War­riors al­though all teams have played six games. It was a dream come true for the law en­forcers head coach Ken­neth Kaunda, who prior to the clash against Sharks, whose wish was to win and avoid ri­vals War­riors in the play­offs. “This win has worked for us in two ways; one, we fin­ished the pre­lim­i­nary stage in pole po­si­tion and two, emerged top in the our pool. We will not face War­rior in the early play-off stage,” he said.

“Hav­ing blown hot and cold in the early sea­son, we are glad we are fi­nally in the play-offs and we hope to re­claim the tro­phy we last won in 2013,” he added.

In the women’s league, 18-time lo­cal cham­pi­ons Or­ange Telkom made bare their in­ten­tion to re­tain the tro­phy with their mas­sive two wins against win­less Day Star Univer­sity 16-0 and Jomo Kenya Univer­sity Agri­cul­ture and Tech­nol­ogy 12-0.

With the win, Telkom lead the stand­ing with 16 points from six matches, five points ahead of ri­vals Strath­more Univer­sity, who were not in ac­tion over the weekend.
