Wairia appears before Senate team to answer queries on returned bursaries
Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wairia was yesterday questioned over Sh700 million meant for bursaries. Wairia appeared before the Senate Public Accounts and Investment Committee at Parliament Buildings. He was questioned on the Auditor General’s 2013-14 report. It said money set aside for bursaries was returned to the Revenue Account at the Central Bank of Kenya. The governor told the committee, chaired by Kisumu Senator Anyang Nyong’o that the county returned the money as there were no clear application forms from students. Auditor General Edward Ouko said bank statements revealed multiple transfers of bursary funds. “On June 24, 2014, Sh5 million was transferred from CBK Development Account to the KCB Standing Imprest Account. The amount transferred from the CBK was later transferred from the KCB Standing Imprest Account to the KCB Revenue account on June 26, 2014,” the report says.
