YOUTHS AND POLICE CLASHED
In 2014, the government said it was considering shutting down two mosques in Mombasa after Muslim youths clashed with police. Muslim leaders accused police of using excessive force when arresting the youth, who were allegedly holding jihad classes. Then Mombasa county commissioner Nelson Marwa said the government might shut down Masjid Musa and Masjid Sakina, which were associated with extremist preaching and al Shabaab recruitment. Police said some youths who were arrested were recruiting at Masjid Musa.
