Make paying taxes cool to promote revenue collection

The Star (Kenya) - - Voices -

Farmers asked Jesus, shall we give, or shall we not give? But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, why tempt me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it. Jesus answering said unto them, give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marveled at him — Mark 12:16-17. According to the 1999 National Census, Kenya has a population of 44 million people and only 1.8 million Kenyans pay taxes. We have to find ways of increasing this number. All Kenyans must finance our growth and development. We cannot continue borrowing and continually ballooning our debt burden. The high cost of living is due to government borrowing. To increase revenue, let’s change from an income tax-based system, to a sales tax-based system and make paying tax cool. We should also educate people why it is important to pay taxes.
