MP Olum to sponsor talented Kibera youth to record music, produce albums
Lang’ata MP Joash Olum yesterday said he will identify and support local artistes from the Kibera slums. “There is great talent in the slums. I think the best way to help youth will be to get somebody like Jua Kali or Nonini and invite all the interested youth to perform. Then Jua Kali or Nonini will be the judges and the winning three groups and individuals will be selected and given cash to record their albums,” he said. He spoke to the Star while presiding over the Joash Olum Sports Tournament in Undugu grounds, Silanga. Youth performed during the tournament and the MP said he is impressed by the local talent. Olum said helping the youth record their music will market them and help them grow their careers. This is a better way of helping slum youth succeed than giving them handouts, he said. Olum asked the Kibera youth to shun leaders who only give them handouts but do not look for a better way to empower them.
