PAY­ING HOMAGE TO KENYA’S HE­ROES

Mashu­jaa Day, also known as He­roes Day, is cel­e­brated ev­ery Oc­to­ber 20th in Kenya since the pro­mul­ga­tion of the new Con­sti­tu­tion in 2010. It hon­ours all he­roes and hero­ines who con­trib­uted to Kenya’s In­de­pen­dence. Be­fore the new Con­sti­tu­tion, Oc­to­ber 20 was Keny­atta Day. It was named af­ter found­ing Pres­i­dent Jomo Keny­atta and the day was in honour of the Kapen­guria Six – Kenyan lead­ers, in­clud­ing Keny­atta, ar­rested by the Bri­tish colo­nial­ists and de­tained in Kapen­guria. The six were prom­i­nent in the strug­gle for In­de­pen­dence.
