PAYING HOMAGE TO KENYA’S HEROES
Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes Day, is celebrated every October 20th in Kenya since the promulgation of the new Constitution in 2010. It honours all heroes and heroines who contributed to Kenya’s Independence. Before the new Constitution, October 20 was Kenyatta Day. It was named after founding President Jomo Kenyatta and the day was in honour of the Kapenguria Six – Kenyan leaders, including Kenyatta, arrested by the British colonialists and detained in Kapenguria. The six were prominent in the struggle for Independence.
