Damp Devils fire squibs
Mou and United sadly downbeat after loss
A heavy 4-0 defeat at Chelsea - the former home of their boss Jose Mourinho - was hardly a cause for celebration for Manchester United’s players.
So it was no surprise that Mourinho’s men looked less than impressed on their return to Stockport late on Sunday night after what was a day to forget for everyone connected with the club at Stamford Bridge.
The Old Trafford giants simply never got going against the Blues, falling behind to Pedro’s opener just 31 seconds into the game and failing to muster any kind of response to the Spaniard’s early strike. Gary Cahill made it 2-0 to the Blues before the break, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante completing the rout in the second half.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was among the miserable United players. David de Gea was among the miserable United players
Mourinho blames defensive mistakes for the defeat against Chelsea.
It all left the United squad - not to mention Mourinho too - with plenty to ponder, the Red Devils looking like they had the weight of the world on their shoulders following their latest Premier League reversal.
And to add insult to injury, United’s players were delayed by 20 minutes on their return from London before some fans shouted at them on their arrival in Stockport.
A clearly downcast Mourinho led the way, with superstars David de Gea, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial all unable to raise a smile either.
Now they’re back in Manchester, Mourinho has a real task on his hands to try and rejuvenate his United side.
Their performance at Chelsea - where the likes of Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba were both anonymous - saw the men in red struggle to get going.
A horrible mix-up between Chris Smalling, De Gea and Daley Blind allowed Pedro in to score and from there United never recovered.
