EU lauds Uhuru for commuting death sentences to life imprisonment
Nineteen European ambassadors have praised President Uhuru Kenyatta for commuting all death sentences to life imprisonment.
The envoys said the EU considers capital punishment “a cruel and inhumane punishment which fails to provide deterrence to criminal behaviour”.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, EU Head of Delegation Ambassador Stefano Dejak (pictured) said the death sentence “represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity”.
He said all EU member states have abolished the death penalty, and a worldwide abolition represents one of the main objectives of the Union’s human rights policy.
