Did Pogba dodge it?
Raiola agent suggests he legally got around third party ownership for player
Paul Pogba’s controversial agent Mino Raiola has raised further questions over a reported €27million (Sh3.0bn) payment he received following his client’s world record move from Juventus to Manchester United.
In an interview published on Saturday, Raiola categorically stated he hadn’t earned his lucrative “commission” as a fee from Juventus.
Instead, he appeared to suggest he had been able to legally get around third party owner regulations (TPOs).
“He (Pogba) came from United for a price of around €1.5m (Sh167.0m). After four years with us he decided to return to England. He wanted to leave at all costs.
“Our asking price was €105m (Sh11.69bn) plus €5m (Sh556.6m) in bonuses, which is payable if the player renews with United or leaves for a fee of more than €50m (Sh5.56bn).
“That brings us to a capital gain in the budget of €95m (Sh10.57bn). Mino Raiola and his company will be paid €27m. Taking fees into account, the total gain for Pogba was €72m (Sh8.01bn).”
However, Raiola, who also represents two other Manchester United players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan as well as former Manchester City and Liverpool star Mario Balotelli who is now with French club Nice, clouded the issue in an interview with the Financial Times. He told them: “I can’t talk about the contract but, in a deal like Pogba’s, it’s not just the clubs who earn from it.”
Asked to explain, the Dutch-based Italian said: “I have to see how I can phrase this in a way that Juventus can not tackle me through the law, let’s say. Hmmm. How can I say it? (long pause) Yes, in this deal Juventus was not the only owner of the player’s rights. Be careful with the legal definition of TPO. But let’s say in that case there was an upside for our side. And by our side, I mean the player’s side. It’s not allowed any more.”
