Spedag’s Bushenei happy to make a comeback to Starlets
Spedag club forward Sharon Bushenei has welcomed her inclusion into the national provisional squad which resumes training today for the Africa women’s Cup of Nations finals between November 19 and December 3 in Cameroon.
Bushenei, who has been away from the national team since 2014, has been tipped to fill the shoes of the doubtful Neddy Atieno who joined Kenya Defence Force.
Bushenei, who has scored seven goals for her side in the ongoing women’s league, was among the seven players, who received a call up prior to Egypt’s International friendly match last week, where Kenya won 1-0.
The other new call ups include Vihiga Queens’ duo of Maurine Ater and Lilian Adera, Gaspo Youth’s Florence Awino, Soccer Queens’ Sharon Aluoch and Thika Queens’ duo of Monica Karambu and Lydia Akoth.
Bushenei, who featured for the side coached by David Ouma in the second half of the friendly match against Egypt, however, remained optimistic ahead of the AWCON.
She said: “I am happy to have earned a call up to the national team. The timing wouldn’t have come at a right but again I know what is at stake.”
She added: “Of course Atieno is an influential player in the team but I am ready and willing to fill her big shoes if I will be given the chance by the technical bench. Ours is to work as a team to ensure we make good account of ourselves in the event that we will be debuting.”
Kenya, who have been drawn in Pool B alongside title holders Nigeria, Ghana and Mali, depart this Friday to Cameroon, where they will play the host nation in a return leg friendly on Sunday in Limbe City. Starlets lost 1-0 to Cameroon a fortnight ago at the safaricom Stadium, Kasarani.
