70 unlicensed chemists held
More than 70 quack pharmacists yesterday were arrested during a crackdown by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. Most of those arrested were not registered with the board and had no qualifications to handle drugs. Police and a team of inspectors from the board conducted the raids in Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa and Lamu counties. They shut unregistered pharmacies and confiscated drugs. The crackdown is underway countrywide. Board senior inspector of drugs Julius Kaluai said the suspects failed to produce the required documents. He spoke in Kisauni. Kaluai said the swoop is targeting quacks selling drugs in illegal outlets, which have not been licensed by the board. The board has only registered 6,000 pharmacists in the country.
