Schools association accuses county of imposing illegal taxes on its members
An association has sued the Nairobi government over illegal taxes levied on its members. The Complementary Schools’ Association of Kenya, which provides alternative basic education, says the county is imposing tax on its members despite the fact that they are community-based organisations. Its members in the Dagoretti sub-branch, which is in court, comprise more than 200 schools providing basic education to children from informal settlements. The association says the county imposes the taxes and demands it issue a single business permit. It said the county is acting in excess of its authority. The association said the schools are not businesses so they should not pay taxes. It says the county decision also goes against the Public Benefits Organisations Act because it hinders much-needed services to the public. It wants the High Court to issue an order stopping the taxes.
