THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS HAS INCREASED THIS YEAR
Kenya Power is targeting to connect 1.5 million new customers this financial year ending next June, a 25 per cent rise from 1.2 million it connected in the previous year. Since July, about 300,000 customers have been connected, Mungai said, bringing total customer base to about 5.2 million against its universal connection target of nine million customers. The government has been working on how privately-owned utilities could participate in the distribution and retailing of electricity from the more than 2,300 megawatts national grid. Treasury CS Henry Rotich said on May 23 that the government has bring investors in the generation part and so in the distribution end, we also want to see what we can do to bring in the private sector. He said it is an ongoing process, and not an event. The CS said it is a question of the interest of the private sector to do the distribution.
