Kenya Power is tar­get­ing to con­nect 1.5 mil­lion new cus­tomers this fi­nan­cial year end­ing next June, a 25 per cent rise from 1.2 mil­lion it con­nected in the pre­vi­ous year. Since July, about 300,000 cus­tomers have been con­nected, Mun­gai said, bring­ing to­tal cus­tomer base to about 5.2 mil­lion against its uni­ver­sal con­nec­tion tar­get of nine mil­lion cus­tomers.The govern­ment has been work­ing on how pri­vately-owned util­i­ties could par­tic­i­pate in the dis­tri­bu­tion and re­tail­ing of elec­tric­ity from the more than 2,300 megawatts na­tional grid. Trea­sury CS Henry Rotich said on May 23 that the govern­ment has bring in­vestors in the gen­er­a­tion part and so in the dis­tri­bu­tion end, we also want to see what we can do to bring in the pri­vate sec­tor. He said it is an on­go­ing process, and not an event. The CS said it is a ques­tion of the in­ter­est of the pri­vate sec­tor to do the dis­tri­bu­tion.
