Irrigation scheme changes dry Lamu
A group of 40 youths in Mpeketoni, Lamu county, have started an irrigation project that is slowly changing lives. The project on 10 acres was funded by the county for Sh4 million. Two months since it started, the bushy and dry land has turned green with farm produce. Lamu is among the counties facing drought and famine, with approximately 32,000 homes affected. The youths used the money to drill wells, clear thickets and subdivide the 10 acres into individual pieces, where they plant maize, tomatoes, onions, pepper, spinach, watermelons and bananas.
