Sand transporters protest against levy, block road

The Star (Kenya) - - Politics -

Sand transporters yesterday blocked the Mai Mahiu-Limuru road, disrupting traffic for five hours, to protest against charges by the Nakuru government.

They said the charges are illegal . On Tuesday last week they transporters obtained a court order stopping the county government from enforcing the levy.

Early in the week, Finance executive Ann Njenga said the county has lost more than Sh10 million following the dispute.

A trader who declined to be named accused the county government of ignoring the court order and enforcing the levy.

“The court stopped the county from collecting any royalties from sand transporters, but they have defied this, leading to the current impasse,” he said.
