Defending champions Korir and Jemeli to skip this year’s Kass run in Eldoret
BY MUIGAI KIGURU / Just as in previous editions, the 2016 Kass Marathon will have new winners after the defending champions opted out.
Albert Korir and Valery Jemeli won the 2015 edition but have both sat out, with Korir having run Toronto Marathon just last month and Jemeli contemplating a go at the Valencia Marathon. Both the Spanish and Kass races will be held on November 20.
“I will not defend my title since I ran on October 6 at the Toronto Marathon. I wish success to those who will compete and may the best athlete win,” said Korir.
Jemeli said she was still in consultation with her manager on which race to participate in but the latter has made his mind on the Valencia run.
“We are still in talks but he prefers the Valencia Marathon. He is the boss,” revealed Jemeli. The race, held in Uasin Gishu (Eldoret) and Nandi (Kapsabet) counties, will be celebrating the 10th edition since inception.
Over the period, the race has never had a consecutive winner with Agnes Jepkosgei, the only double winner in 2012 and 2014.
Other winners include Magdalene Chemjor and Abraham Keter (2007), Georgina Rono and James Cheboi (2008), Elizabeth Chemweno and David Barmasai (2009), Magdalene Mukunzi and Isaac Sigei (2010), Rita Jeptoo and Paul Koech (2011), Weldon Kirui (2012), Alice Chelagat and Thomas Kiplagat (2013) and Philip Kangogo (2014).
