Two sisters died on Wednesday when a quarry caved in at Chepkongony village, Bureti subcounty. Another sister escaped unhurt.

Mercy Cheptoo, 18, a form one student at Getarwet Secondary School, and Linner Chepkurui, a standard two pupil at Getarwet Primary School, were digging out white clay to decorate their house ahead of Christmas. The white clay is used by the Kipsigis community to beautify mud-walled houses, especially during festivities. The girls were using jembes to dig up the clay.

Bureti subcounty police boss Ali Abdullahi said the girl who escaped unhurt raised the alarm when she realised the quarry was caving in.

He said it took residents and police four hours to remove the two girls from the soil and clay

“After police and the public rescued the two from the cave-in, they were rushed to Litein Mission Hospital, but were pronounced dead on arrival,” Abdullahi said.

The bodies were taken to Kapkatet Level 4 Hospital mortuary.
