23 face fines of up to Sh5m for power theft
CYNTHIA ILAKO/ About 23 people face fines of up to Sh5 million for electricity theft after being nabbed by Kenya Power officials last week in an ongoing crackdown on illegal connections. Kitui and Kikuyu recorded the highest arrests at 12, Kisumu and Kakamega had seven each, two were arrested in Nairobi, while Central and North Rift had single arrest each. “We will continue carrying out a countrywide crackdown on all unauthorised power connections to clean up the network. Those who will be found culpable, including the beneficiaries, will face the full force of the law,” Kenya Power’s acting manager for security services Geoffrey Kigen said. Kenya Power has arrested and prosecuted 113 suspects in the last three months for various crimes including illegal connections and vandalism. Kigen said criminals are impersonating Kenya Power staff.
