23 face fines of up to Sh5m for power theft

CYNTHIA ILAKO/ About 23 peo­ple face fines of up to Sh5 mil­lion for elec­tric­ity theft af­ter be­ing nabbed by Kenya Power of­fi­cials last week in an on­go­ing crack­down on il­le­gal con­nec­tions. Ki­tui and Kikuyu recorded the high­est ar­rests at 12, Kisumu and Kakamega had seven each, two were ar­rested in Nairobi, while Cen­tral and North Rift had sin­gle ar­rest each. “We will con­tinue car­ry­ing out a coun­try­wide crack­down on all unau­tho­rised power con­nec­tions to clean up the net­work. Those who will be found cul­pa­ble, in­clud­ing the ben­e­fi­cia­ries, will face the full force of the law,” Kenya Power’s act­ing man­ager for se­cu­rity ser­vices Ge­of­frey Ki­gen said. Kenya Power has ar­rested and pros­e­cuted 113 sus­pects in the last three months for var­i­ous crimes in­clud­ing il­le­gal con­nec­tions and van­dal­ism. Ki­gen said crim­i­nals are im­per­son­at­ing Kenya Power staff.
